Right now I’m revisiting some work I shot a while back in called ‘Clay Country.’ I’ve ignored this project for too long. I’ve struggled with how it closely resembles so many other things – things I’ve shot before and things other people have shot before. That is why this work has remained, somehow, without a destination. But I’ve come to review it again and I’ve added some more images to the collection. My vision for it in the future will be as prints or perhaps even a book. I think in order to make it work for me I will also need to add something else into the work, to make something new from it. However, at the moment this is just image making.
But before I get that far I have one more decision to make in terms of how the work looks. I’m struggling between black and white and colour. The two options are shown below.
I’m undecided. I’m even undecided in terms of the black and the white, since I’ve not actually gone totally monochrome. I know I’m going to have to live with this work and the decisions I make. My next step will be to make some prints and see how they compare. I may even ask some other people what they think. The problem with that will be acting on their good advice.
Of course I’ve not even considered my motivation for cropping these square. They work square and I’ve found that since I’ve been working more with video and moving imagery I have come to unconsciously prefer a square format for my stills work. I need to analyse that decision at some point, but for now I will live with it.
